Water service has been restored up to Kamaʻole Road in Upper Kula. With water service restored, residents are advised to flush their water lines. If you have a separate storage tank, it is also recommended that you drain and flush the tank.

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply has lifted water conservation advisories for all customer areas on Maui and Molokaʻi, with the exception of the Upper Kula area from Pilikino Place to Kanaio on Maui, where a conservation advisory remains in effect due to storm-related damage.

Maui fire crews are responding to a structure fire in the area of Kanaio, past ʻUlupalakua along the Piʻilani Highway. This is on the slopes of Haleakalā, mauka of ʻĀhihi Kīnaʻu in South Maui. These images came into our newsroom at around 8:42 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Following recent rainfall that improved surface water flows and replenished reservoirs, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) is suspending the Stage 2 Upcountry water shortage and downgrading it to a Stage 1, effective immediately and until further notice.

With a Stage 3 water shortage in effect for Upcountry areas, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply is providing additional information.

The Maui Department of Water Supply on Friday announced a Stage 3 water shortage for consumers in the Upcountry Maui service area, requiring the implementation of mandatory and strict water conservation measures.

The County of Maui anticipates the reopening of the Hāna Highway at ʻAlelele Point to limited access to local traffic by Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

An estimated 175 abandoned derelict cars and trucks are being removed from unencumbered State land in the remote area of Kanaio on Maui over the next three weeks. 

Crews continue to respond to a few individual pocket storm-related outages remaining in the Upcountry and Kanaio area today.

A Stage 1 water shortage has been lifted for Upcountry.  The decision was made due to near-normal rainfall, a short-term forecast for more wet weather and adequate water storage in Upcountry reservoirs.  

Piʻilani Highway (Hwy 31) is closed at mile marker 17 in Kanaio due to a vehicle accident.

Maui fire crews are currently on scene of a brush fire in the upper Kanaio area. The fire is approximately 15 acres in size and moving in thick brush with strong winds being reported.

As of 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, approximately two acres of heavy brush has burned in Upper Kanaio, and the fire was nearly contained at last report.

Maui police launched an investigation on Tuesday afternoon following an alleged shooting reported at a home in the Kanaio area of East Maui.

One of the men allegedly threatened the victims with a black folding knife in Makawao and questioned them regarding the theft of a cooler and beer in Kanaio.

The Maui County Department of Water Supply will be performing work in the Kula area from August 23-25. Work will be performed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Firefighters rescued a man along the King’s Trail in Kanaio after he became lost while hiking alone in South Maui.

The County is proposing an $8.3 million improvement project to bring the existing Ulupalakua Water System up to current Water System Standards.
