On Sunday, Oct. 27, Maui Arts & Cultural Center again celebrates the musical tradition of Hawai’i’s famous four-string instrument at the 17th annual Maui ‘Ukulele Festival, a free Maui community music event in the A&B Amphitheater and Yokouchi Pavilion.

Longtime musician and on-air Maui radio personality, Shane Kaonohiokalā Kahalehau, was recognized by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts with the 2024 Nā Hōkū Hanohano award for Most Promising Artist of the Year.

The 33rd Annual Kī Hō‘alu Festival returns to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center live and in-person as well as livestreamed on Sunday, June 30.

Grammy winner John Cruz and several other Hawaiʻi entertainers are scheduled to perform at a celebration of music on Maui at the 3rd annual Make Music Hawaiʻi on April 23. The “Mele Maui” event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maui Ocean Center.

The Maui Chamber of Commerce announced Alaka‘i Paleka and Kathy Collins as the local celebrity hosts for the 7th Annual Virtual Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival. The virtual event will feature shopping and interacting with vendors in virtual booths, a two-day live streaming component with QVC-style vendor presentations, sponsor messages, a chef’s demonstration, fashion show, vendor commercials, live musical entertainment and local programming.

This week’s guest is Dr. Vijak Ayasanonda from the Maui Memorial Medical Center.  Dr. Ayasanonda, who is an emergency room physician at the Maui hospital, answers questions about hospital capacity, what the hospital is doing differently during this second wave of infection and why antigen testing is now included in DOH totals. 

On Saturday, Mayor Victorino visited Kahului Airport to check on layout and staffing.  “I would warn everyone, please be patient if you are returning or leaving.  The lines may be a little longer than normal so please be patient,” he said.

Today, the mayor spoke with listeners of KPOA 93.5 FM on Maui, and shared his thoughts on new rules that take effect tonight, including a pilot nighttime curfew program that is in effect from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Dr. Thompson spoke with KPOA’s Shane Kahalehau, discussing how families can talk to their children about the pandemic, avoid overexposure to information, and create learning experiences out of preparation and activities.

Mayor Victorino reiterated the need for social distancing and refraining from travel unless absolutely necessary.  If medical treatment is needed off-island, medical transport is still permitted, but self-quarantine would be required upon their return home.  Most medical facilities are not doing elective surgeries at this time, according to Mayor Victorino.
