The Warriors took another impressive step towards showing everyone who’s boss in Maui high school football with a 49-28 win over Baldwin on Friday night at Kanai’aupuni Stadium.

Karsyn Pupunu and Frank Abreu, a pair of Kamehameha Schools Maui alumni, are the only Maui Interscholastic League graduates on the Rainbow Warriors’ football roster this season. 

The Kahului SONIC team has earned a spot among the Top 12 in the nation out of more than 3,100 teams and will compete in the final round of the Dr Pepper SONIC Games competition in Nashville on Oct. 5 — an exciting first-time Mainland experience for many of the team members. 

Zedekaiah Campbell became the Warriors’ all-time leading rusher with a three-touchdown, 159-yard performance.

After losing 27 seniors, the defending champion Lunas will look to a new crop of rising leaders to lead them back to the state tournament. Baldwin and Maui High will have something to say about that.

This summer, nine students from Maui High, King Kekaulike and Baldwin high schools participated in Mahi Pono’s paid summer internship program, where they propagated nearly 2,000 culturally significant plants for residents who lost their home gardens that included cherished lei plants during the 2023 wildfires.

As spring season winds down, Warriors baseball team and Sabers boys volleyball team know they will be in their state tournaments. MIL track also shining through.

The Maui High School boys volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start and appears to be the team to beat in the Maui Interscholastic League as the 2025 season begins.

The King Kekaulike boys and Maui Christian Academy girls claimed team titles at the season-opening Maui Interscholastic League surf competition Saturday at D.T. Fleming Beach Park.

The Sacred Hearts School third-grader won the title last month, the first ever for a Maui wrestler at the prestigious tournament

The 55th annual Garner Ivey Maui Invitational Wrestling Tournament brought the Forest Grove High School teams from Oregon, led by Baldwin High School alumnus Guy Takahashi. Also at the meet was Frank Johnson, the Linfield University head coach, who was recruiting the talent at the meet that also included high school teams from around the state.

In football, King Kekaulike deals Kamehameha Maui its first MIL loss to force a Division II title game. And in volleyball, Maui Prep clinched its first MIL D-II title and will join three other MIL teams in the state tournaments this week.

Some Lahaina students who lost their homes have said goodbye to their friends and their dreams of attending Lahainaluna to finish their high school years at other campuses.

Lahainaluna, Kamehameha Maui and Maui High win in football, while Baldwin and Seabury stay undefeated in volleyball.

Seabury Hall continues cross country dominance, Lunas extend MIL football winning streak and Baldwin stays undefeated in girls volleyball.

The two teams joined in the potluck tradition after Lahainaluna beat Moloka‘i in the Famers’ MIL 11-player football debut on Saturday night.

The Farmers have gone from playing flag football and borrowing equipment to dominating the eight-player ranks and finally making it to the 11-player stage.

Corniel say’s he’s “fulfilled my coaching goals” and plans to focus on his family. Also in Maui County sports over the weekend, Baldwin broke its 22-game losing streak and Hawaiian Canoe Club won big at World Sprints in Hilo.

“Last year after the fire, it was chaos. … So, this year is totally welcome because we are at our home stadium, we know school is going to be here. It’s just so good to be back out here,” Lahainaluna head coach Dean Rickard said.

Students are graduating at a time when median home prices on Maui are $1.3 million and thousands of Lahaina families struggle with displacement. They’re facing big choices that could keep them on Maui or send them to the Mainland. And while some say they want to return, they’re well aware of the cost.
