Gerald W. Galaway Jr., 38, of Santa Cruz, California, pleaded not-guilty to the charges included in the grand jury indictment of second degree murder, attempted first degree sexual assault, and kidnapping.

Gerald W. Galaway Jr. was arrested at around 1:10 p.m. and is expected to appear in 2nd Circuity Court on Maui tomorrow morning.

A grand jury indictment was handed down today in a case involving the death of a Santa Cruz woman on Maui. The defendant, Gerald W. Galaway Jr., who remains hospitalized at Maui Memorial Medical Center, is also being served with a grand jury warrant

Asphyxiation Cause of Death in Nakalele Murder

An autopsy report revealed that the cause of death was asphyxiation, according to Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra.

Criminal Complaint Filed in Nakalele Murder; Hearing Set

The complaint alleges the suspect intentionally, or knowingly restrained the victim with intent to inflict bodily injury upon her or subject her to a sexual offense.

Maui Police have identified the victim in an ongoing homicide investigation as 45-year-old Alan Vegas of Kaupo. Authorities say the man died as a result of a single gunshot wound which in turn caused internal bleeding.
