The county’s use of injection wells at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility in West Maui violates the federal Clean Water Act according to a federal district court ruling on Friday, the environmental law firm Earthjustice announced.
The groups allege that wastewater or sewage from the treatment facility is injected into the wells, and then flows via groundwater through the subsurface into near-shore Maui ocean waters.
The County of Maui must fully disinfect all wastewater at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility under a proposed compliance order issued by the EPA.
The Environmental Protection Agency joins state and federal agencies this week in launching an investigation to track suspected pollution from the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation facility.
