A Maui County Council committee voted 5-1 Wednesday to recommend passage of two land use bills that would clear the way for the proposed Hoʻonani Village mixed-use development on former sugarcane fields near Kahului Airport, overriding deferral recommendations from three county departments with concerns about infrastructure shortfalls.

A mixed-use development proposed for 40 acres of former sugarcane land near Pāʻia won committee approval Wednesday, moving a project that would bring up to 170 homes, commercial businesses, a medical clinic and a public parking lot to the next stage of a years-long entitlement process.

The Maui Planning Commission unanimously recommended Tuesday that the Maui County Council defer action on the 1,608-unit Hoʻonani Village project near Kahului Airport until a draft environmental impact statement is published.

The Maui Planning Commission is scheduled to review land use bills regarding the proposed Hoʻonani Village project near Kahului Airport, as well as legislation regarding accessory dwelling units, agricultural retail structures and electric vehicle charging stations.

The Maui County Council’s Water and Infrastructure Committee will meet beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday to discuss a resolution urging the county administration to prioritize the use of recycled water and preserve potable water for affordable housing and other residential uses, Council Member Tom Cook announced Monday.

The updated West Maui Community Plan and its web map have been posted online by the Maui County Department of Planning.

“With more than 7,600 visitors coming to Maui each day, we are far exceeding the guidance of our Maui Island Plan, which states that there should be only one visitor for every three residents,” said Paltin, who chairs the committee.

The Maui Planning Commission’s Department of Planning posted its draft of the West Maui Community Plan online for public viewing. The plan is intended to serve as a long-range guide for values and goals in West Maui.

Maui County’s Department of Planning launched a publicly accessible and interactive “Land Use Viewer” for visualizing various Maui County land use datasets. 

Will Spence, the planning director for the County of Maui, will discuss land use matters at a public informational meeting in Hana on Thursday, August 30.

Hana is the final region the General Plan Committee needs to consider before completing its review of Chapter 8 of the Maui Island Plan.

Danny Mateo, Maui County Council Chairman, has represented Molokai for five terms. Though he will not be seeking office, he hopes to remain active in public affairs.

The Maui Island Plan is a long and complicated proposed law that could direct island growth through 2030.

The meeting, hosted by the Maui County Council’s General Plan Committee will be held February 2, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Baisa, offered tips to testifiers, saying those who provide input on the Maui Island Plan would help their cause if they submitted written testimony.

General Plan Committee Chair, Gladys Baisa called the task daunting, but expressed confidence in being able to enact the Maui Island Plan later this year.

The decision making process on the Maui Island Plan gets underway next week in the council chambers.
