A motor vehicle collision on the Kūihelani Highway Thursday morning claimed the life of a 27-year-old Kahului man. The victim has since been identified as Victor Harris.
Visitor reported missing after failing to return from snorkeling in Kāʻanapali
Weems was reported missing by a concerned family member on the evening of Friday, May 8, 2026, after he failed to return from going snorkeling in the area of 100 Nohea Kai Drive in Kāʻanapali. Weems had texted a family member at 1:30 p.m., indicating he was going snorkeling, and at approximately 3 p.m., a guest reported to hotel staff that they had observed what appeared to be a male in distress in the ocean.
Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign runs from May 11-31, 2026
Beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, the Maui Police Department Traffic Division will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign. Motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement and patrols, which will continue through Sunday, May 31, 2026, and include the use of unmarked patrol vehicles to enforce seat belt and child passenger restraint laws.

At approximately 11:40 a.m., the woman was reportedly attempting to gather water using a basket when she fell into the river. Due to recent heavy rains, the river was flowing rapidly at the time. According to a witness, she became fully submerged and has not been seen since.
