Humpback Whale Freed of Life-Threatening Entanglement

An adult humpback whale was freed of hundreds of feet of small gauge line during a successful disentanglement effort conducted this morning in waters off of West Maui.

The first whale sighting off Maui for the 2013 season was reported on Saturday morning, about two miles from Molokini.

Humpback Whale Freed of Entanglement in Maui Waters

Authorities say the entanglement was the third reported and confirmed this season, and the first successful response of the 2012-2013 season. The animal was found and reported by the tour vessel, Man-of-War, last Friday near Lahaina.

The latest sighting was reported at around 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 by crews aboard the Kaulana vessel while en route to Lana’i on a snorkeling adventure.
