High Winds Down Trees, Power Lines in Lahaina

Emergency crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Engine-3 worked to secure an area on Ala Moana Street in Lahaina at around 7:35 a.m., where two 30-foot trees fell blocking the west-bound lane of travel.

Electrical service has been restored to customers in Waiehu area as of 9:50 a.m. and the Lahaina area as of 9:54 a.m. Officials from Maui Electric Company apologized for any inconvenience this situation may have caused and thanked customers for their patience and understanding.

Officials with Maui Electric Company say power was restored to all affected areas by 7:45 a.m. The cause of the outage was under investigation.

East Maui Power Restored

Maui Electric Company crews continue to investigate the cause of a power outage in East Maui that knocked out electricity for about 23 minutes this afternoon. The outage was first reported at 1:17 p.m., and all areas affected by the outage had power restored by 1:40 p.m., according to company officials.

BRIEF: Thanksgivng Power Outage West Maui

Maui Electric Company has confirmed a power outage in the following areas: Lahaina, Olowalu, and Launiupoko bounded by Mill St., Prison St., Front St., Shaw St., Aholo Rd., Puamana Subd., Honoapiilani Hwy., Puunoa Subd., Makila Ridge Subd., Olowalu, Kai Hele Ku St., Mahanlua Nui Subd., Launiupoko, Ukumehama Subd., and laterals. MECO is working to identify the cause and restore electrical service as quickly and safely as possible.

MECO Identifies Cause of South Maui Power Outage

“We know that this situation was an inconvenience for our customers in South Maui and we sincerely apologize,” said MECO.

MECO Announces Scheduled Outage in Hana

The work will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, and will affect sections of the Hana Highway from Ulumalu Road in Haiku (including Huelo, Kailua, Keanae, and Nahiku) to Kaeleku in Hana.

As of 4:38 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, MECO officials say power has been restored to customers affected by an power outage reported earlier this afternoon. The outage was first reported just before 4 p.m. in the Waihee, Waiehu and Kahakuloa areas.

“Until full electrical power service is restored by Maui Electric, the department is unable to pump water to maintain desirable water levels in the storage tanks,” said Maui Department of Water Supply Administrative Officer Jacky Takakura.

UPDATE: 20,000 Maui Customers Affected by Widespread Outage

As of 5 p.m., all power is restored on Maui. MECO officials say a malfunction on the controls of two large generating units at Maalaea Power Plant caused the units to trip offline. Approximately 20,000 customers were initially affected by the power outage.

Shortly before noon today high winds knocked down a tree that brought down two electrical lines on Hana Highway near Kanaha Pond Sanctuary. Power was restored by 1:40 p.m.

Brief outages were reported in parts of Lahaina, Waiehu and Upcountry Maui, after a large diesel generating unit at the Maui Electric Company Maalaea Power Plant tripped offline.
