Baldwin High School quarterback Taje Akaka-Foster ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, leading the Bears to their first Maui Interscholastic League victory of the 2014 season Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

The sleeping giant from South Lono Avenue woke up Friday after 14 years of losing to Central Maui public-school rival Baldwin in Maui Interscholastic League football.

The Maui High School football team snapped a 27-game losing streak — that dated back 14 years — to Baldwin High Friday, beating the Bears 20-17 at War Memorial Stadium.

Fans of Lahainaluna High School football were not disappointed Friday at the official Maui Interscholastic League reveal, where the 2014 early-season model of the Lunas was unveiled at War Memorial Stadium before an estimated crowd of about 2,000.

Snapping the football from center to quarterback is not a perfect exercise. And the few miss snaps Thursday at War Memorial Stadium proved to be game-changers as Maui High rallied behind a pair of second-quarter touchdowns en route to a 48-11 victory over Kamehameha Maui.

The Lahainaluna High School football team closed out the 2012 MIL regular season Friday with an unprecedented sixth shutout, blanking Maui High, 31-0, before a sparse crowd of about 1,500 at War Memorial Stadium.
