New Itinerary Introduced for “Un-Cruise Adventures” on Molokaʻi

The vessel got off to a rocky start when it began visits to Molokaʻi in late 2011, amid concerns by about 40 protesters who at one point staged a water blockade.

A group of about 40 protesters returned to Kaunakakai Harbor on Molokai on Saturday as the Safari Explorer vessel resumed port calls to the island. Despite an agreement in place, demonstrators expressed anger and resentment over additional enforcement presence saying it, “brought out many more protesters, and made things worse.”

Security Zone Implemented With Safari Explorer’s Return to Kaunakakai

A security zone will be enforced one hour prior to Kaunakakai Harbor entries and departures by the passenger vessel Safari Explorer when it resumes service to Molokai on Jan. 21. An informational meeting is set for Jan. 17.

Safari Explorer CEO Dan Blanchard issued a statement this afternoon informing the Molokai Community that the company’s vessel will postpone its planned Friday and Saturday visits to the island.

Molokai Chamber Issues Statement Backing Cruise

The Molokai Chamber of Commerce today issued a statement in support of a cruise company that has encountered protests in recent weeks from a small group of residents.

Another Cruise Ship Protest Planned on Molokai

The protest, which is the third of its kind, is planned for 6 a.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Kaunakakai Wharf. There are four more inter-island trips planned between now and the end of the year by the American Safari Cruises company, according to the company’s booking website.
