Tom Cook officially filed his nomination papers Tuesday to seek re-election to the South Maui residency seat on the Maui County Council, launching a campaign focused on housing solutions, infrastructure improvements, and building a stronger future for Maui County.

Council Member Tom Cook’s Open House at the South Maui Residency Area Office scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2026 has been canceled due to the approaching kona storm.

The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court has unanimously ruled in favor of incumbent South Maui Council Member Tom Cook and against an election challenge by opponent and former Council Member Kelly King.

The lawsuit claims the Clerk’s Office failed to follow the law related to the review of voter signatures on return identification envelopes, thereby improperly invalidating signatures. The Clerk’s Office asserts that all laws and administrative rules were followed.

Former Maui County Council Chair Kelly T. King and 30 Maui County voters have filed an election contest with the Hawai’i Supreme Court seeking to void the results of the South Maui County Council race and to order the holding of a new election.

The state Office of Elections released the final results of the 2024 elections for Hawaiʻi voters. The final printout was posted by the State Office of Elections at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 after voters had a chance to cure deficiencies with their ballot envelopes. Results from the 2024 Hawaiʻi General Election are being posed here as they become available, with a focus on races impacting Maui County.

Today is Primary Election Day across the state of Hawaiʻi. The election runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024.

Maui County Council Presiding Officer Pro Tempore Tasha Kama announced today she will hold a Kahului residency area town hall to discuss the fiscal year 2025 budget, March 12 at 6 p.m. at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center’s former movie theater.

Council Member Thomas Cook announced today that he will be hosting a South Maui community town hall at 6 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the Maui Economic Development Board’s Malcolm Center.

Kelly Takaya King officially announced her intent to run for her previously held Maui County Council seat for the South Maui District.

Candidate interviews conducted by the Kula Community Association will be aired on Akakū Maui Community Media on channels 54 and 55 between Oct. 19-28, 2022.

On Maui, crowded races include the Kahului Council seat where seven candidates are running. Thereʻs also five people running for the Makawao-Haʻikū-Pāʻia council vacancy, and five in the race for the District 13 House seat.

South Maui’s first County Council District Office, located at the Maui Research and Technology Park, is now open to the public.

King is perhaps best known for her role as Vice President of Pacific Biodiesel, a locally owned renewable fuel company that pioneered the biodiesel industry with its first processing plant built on Maui in 1996.
