Two visitors were pulled unresponsive from waters on the north side of the ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve in South Maui on Saturday afternoon. Emergency responders were called to a report of swimmers/snorkelers in distress about 100-150 yards offshore at around 12:02 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2024. Authorities have since identified the victims as a 26-year-old woman and 25-year-old man, both residents of Washington state.

Community town hall for South Maui, Feb. 29

Council Member Thomas Cook announced today that he will be hosting a South Maui community town hall at 6 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the Maui Economic Development Board’s Malcolm Center.

HECO conducting utility pole audit on Maui, Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi island

Hawaiian Electric Co. is conducting an inventory audit of attachments on utility poles throughout Maui, and Oʻahu and Hawai‘i island as well, according to an announcement. Work will begin in parts of West and Central Maui and continue later in South Maui and around the island through November.

Emergency road repairs underway following heavy rains, flooding in Kīhei, Maui

Emergency roadway repairs are being conducted over the next few days on South Kīhei Road from Ohukai Road to Maui Bay Villas, following heavy rains earlier this week. The area is temporarily closed to motorists, with the exception of local traffic.

$354,000 grant approved for sediment removal and flood mitigation in South Maui

A stormwater-detention basin at Kūlanihākoʻi will benefit North Kīhei by mitigating flooding on the slopes of Haleakalā and assist in marine-life protection, according to Council member Cook.
