Witnesses to yesterday’s shark sighting incident in Wailea described the shark’s behavior as “aggressive,” saying a large tiger shark pursued ocean goers in the Ulua and Mokapu Beach areas.

Maui Now received reports of a shark sighting at Mokapu Beach in South Maui on Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2016. Bystanders report that a tiger shark reportedly followed two people and exhibited aggressive behavior. No injuries were reported. DNLR was on scene at last report.
New Maui Brochure Features Tips on Ocean Safety, Shorebreak and Sharks
The brochure includes a map of County beach parks that have lifeguards, as well as tips on how to deal with rip currents and shorebreaks, and how to avoid chance encounters with sharks. Several months after the debut of an educational ocean safety video at Kahului Airport, Maui County officials today announced the release of an Ocean Safety Guide brochure available for download online.

Cove Park Incident Likely Not a Shark Bite
Fire officials say a bite incident at Cove Park in South Maui this morning was likely not caused by a shark. Firefighters from Kīhei responded to Cove Park at 8:55 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014 for a report of a possible shark bite, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
DLNR: Tiger Shark Approaches Paddle Surfer at Ukumehame
According to a DLNR spokesperson, a 43-year-old Haʻikū man identified as Matt Kinoshita told authorities that he was paddle surfing about 75 yards off Ukumehame in five feet of water at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when he saw an eight-foot tiger shark approaching him from the side with its mouth open.

Fatal Shark Attack Forces Closure of South Maui Shoreline
Emergency crews are responding to a fatal shark attack off of South Maui this morning. Officials have reportedly closed the shoreline from “Dumps” in La Perouse to Makena Landing. The incident was reported at around 9 a.m. outside of Makena.

Website Tracks Tiger Sharks Tagged Near Maui
So far, the website features tracking of seven sharks–one male and six female–ranging in size from 9.3 feet to 14.2 feet. The tracking dates back to the period starting between Oct. 17 and 20, 2013, when the sharks were first tagged with the satellite devices.
Beach at Kaʻa Re-Opened Following Shark Bite
Since the incident, officials with the DLNR Aquatic Resources division say a 12-14 foot tiger shark was spotted by lifeguards patrolling the area on Thursday afternoon; and a separate spotting of a “large shark” was reported by DLNR at around 7:50 a.m. today (Friday, Nov. 1), but it subsequently left the area.
