#Transient Accommodations

Some residents backed a plan to cap Maui’s transient accommodations, while industry testifiers questioned whether a ceiling would have unintended legal and financial consequences during a Maui County Council committee meeting Wednesday.

The council’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee will discuss the findings and recommendations of its Tourism Management and Economic Development Temporary Investigative Group—including a proposal to establish caps on all transient accommodations.

Bills on vacation rentals in apartment districts and new hotels on Maui will be heard on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021.

Managing Director Baz said the mayor does not believe Bill 60 will relieve crowds at Kahului Airport, reduce traffic on Maui’s roadways, or solve the problem of transient vacation rentals operating in neighborhoods. “Bill 60 will simply limit the choice of visitor accommodations in West and South Maui for the next 5-10 years,” said Baz.

George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority discussed several legislative bills that he says will impact Hawaiʻi’s tourism future.

Eleven months into the current 2012 fiscal year and general fund deposits are up by 13.6% compared with the 2011 fiscal year.
