In a statement released by the Hawaii Tourism Authority today, Mike McCartney, President and CEO, said that despite an anticipated decrease in airlift from Japan, the overall number of air seats will be relatively flat compared to the same period last year.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is projecting an 18.3 percent decline in arrivals from Japan for the month of March, less than the 25 percent drop initially projected following the events on March 11.

The American Red Cross and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) are the receipients of $100,000 contributed by Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. (HEI) along with its subsidiaries American Savings Bank, Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company and Maui Electric Company to support recovery efforts from the Japan earthquake and tsunami aftermath.

Here in Maui County, there was $600,000 in damages reported to homes and businesses, and $2.7 million in damage to government infrastructure.

In the wake of Thursday’s earthquake and tsunami, Mobi PCS is offering customers and the public at large free calls to Japan through Sunday, March 13.

Aerial reconnaissance was conducted at first light on Friday morning to assess the impacts of 6 foot tsunami waves that flooded many inland areas and washed debris ashore on Maui.

The US Geological Survey now says the quake was a 3.6 magnitude tremor centered 2 miles South West of Waimanalo, Oahu.

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred off the Hamakua coast late Sunday. The quake was located 30 miles WNW of Hilo, Hawaii, or 60 miles SSE of Hana, Maui.
