COUNTY TO BUILD RECYCLING CENTER ON LANAI, TAKE OWNERSHIP OF LANAI LANDFILL

Across the Water:  The county finalized two key land agreements on Lanai that will establish a recycling center on a 1-acre site, and convey ownership of the 35-acre Lanai Landfill to the County.  Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares said the agreement with Castle & Cooke allows the county to resolve ownership issues, receive daily landfill cover at no cost, and proceed with necessary storm drainage improvements.

The agreement also resolved a number of lingering issues over tipping fees, and the interpretation of agreements made more than 40 years ago.  The MOU addressed the previous 25-acre expansion of the Landfill site, the date of which is unknown. State Department of Health regulations require that landfills utilize cover fill; under this new agreement C&C, the only source of cover material on the island, will provide the cover at no cost.

“We are pleased to work with the County in this public-private partnership to benefit the community,” said Castle & Cooke Hawaii President Harry Saunders.  “This agreement supports our continued recycling and sustainability efforts on Lanai.”
