MAUI ROADWORK FOR FEB 2-6, 2009

OVERVIEW OF MAUI ROAD PROJECTS:

On the roads, several projects continue across the Valley Isle this week. Upcountry, concrete overlay work continues on the Haleakala Highway resulting in a single lane uphill closure and an afternoon contraflow for downhill motorists. In South and West Maui, fiber optic cable installations will impact traffic in Wailea and Kaanapali between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily. And in Kahului, nighttime single lane closures continue on Kahului Beach Road for trenching and pavement striping. Motorists should allow extra travel time and use caution when driving through work areas. All projects are weather-permitting.

24-HOUR HALEAKALA HIGHWAY LANE CLOSURES

Maui motorists are advised of a 24-hour single lane closures on the Haleakala Highway in the Pukalani-bound (uphill) direction from North Firebreak Road to Keahua Road for concrete overlay operations. One Kahului-bound (downhill) lane will be contra-flowed to provide an additional Pukalani-bound (uphill) lane on the following dates and times:

• Monday, Feb. 2, to Thursday, Feb. 5, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., nightly.
• Friday afternoon, February 6, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Officials from the state Department of Transportation say the four-inch concrete overlay will cover a five-mile uphill portion of Haleakala Highway and is expected to extend the life of the roadway by more than 30 years. Phase I of the project focuses on the area between North Firebreak Road and Keahua Junction. Phase II will extend from Keahua Junction to Haliimaile Road. The final phase will focus on the half-mile section below the Old Haleakala Road off-ramp. Completion of the entire project is anticipated in March of 2009.

HONOAPIILANI HIGHWAY DAYTIME ROADWORK

Motorists are advised of intermittent single lane closures on Honoapiilani Highway in the Kaanapali-bound (northbound) direction between Kapunakea Street and Leialii Parkway. The work continues Monday, Feb. 2, to Friday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., daily, for clean up work for fiber optic cable installations.

PIILANI HIGHWAY DAYTIME ROADWORK

Motorists are advised of daytime single lane closures on Piilani Highway in the Kahului-Bound (westbound) direction between Wailea Ike Drive and Kilohana Drive on Monday, Feb. 2, through Friday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., daily, for clean up work for fiber optic cable installations.

KAHULUI BEACH ROAD NIGHTTIME LANE CLOSURES

Motorists are advised of alternating single lane closures on Kahului Beach Road in both directions between Kaahumanu Avenue and Waiehu Beach Road on Sunday, Feb. 1, through Friday, Feb. 6, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., nightly, for trenching work for pavement striping operations.
