This is your Ka’apuni update for Saturday evening, February 21st: the torch lit procession for unity in the Native Hawaiian Community is rounding out its first full day of walking. The journey started at Moku’ula in Lahaina at midnight on Friday and by 7 o’clock tonight was exiting the West Maui Mountains. Those awaiting the arrival in towns further down the road in Waihe’e, Waiehu and Paukukalo were already parked and waiting for the procession to pass. We walked alongside Ke’eaumoku Kapu for this latest update.

The procession was still expected to pass through Central Maui tonight and head into Paia later in the evening. Just a reminder to motorists to be mindful and exercise extra caution when passing by marchers for the safety of those on the road and on foot. Our next update will be provided Sunday morning.

There were about 150 people at the opening protocol ceremony last night, and about a dozen marchers on the latest leg, with members of various moku or districts invited to join in as the group passes through.
