NEW LANAI SENIOR CENTER UNDER REVIEW

Residents are being asked to weigh in on the proposed design for the new Lanai Senior Center. Plans call for the construction of a two-level 5,200 sq. ft. facility, occupied by the senior center on the upper level and county offices and storage on the lower level. A meeting will be held to gather public comment on Wed. March 18^th at 3 p.m. at the island’s existing senior center.

The meeting will include a presentation by the Department of Housing and Human Concerns Project Manager, a Q& A session and feedback from the public on the proposed design. Comments and suggestions on the plans may also be submitted to the Urban Design Review Board by sending correspondence to the County of Maui Department of Planning, Attn.: Urban Design Review Board, via FAX: 270-1775; email: [email protected] or mail: 250 High Street, Wailuku, HI 96793.

The Urban Design Board also will allow formal public testimony at its regularly scheduled meeting on Maui, which will be held May 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Planning Department Conference Room, located at 250 South High Street, Wailuku.

The design proposal specifically calls for the upper level to be at grade with Seventh Street and fronting Dole Park for easy access. The lower lever is designed as a basement for storage and offices for the County’s DHHC and the Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing (DMVL).

“This is a special building that has seen many chapters of Lanai’s history, and the County will provide a photographic and descriptive documentation to the state archives before the building is demolished following the requirements of the State Historic Preservation Office. In its place, a new, modernized structure will be built to better serve the Lanai community,” said DHHC Director Lori Tsuhako.
