Maui police are investigating the discovery today of skeletal remains found early this morning in Wailuku. Patrol officers were responding to a motor vehicle accident at about 6:30 a.m. when they found the remains in shrubbery about 20 yards south of the accident scene.

The accident occurred on Kahului Beach Road, near Mile Post Marker 1, which is located on the Kahului side of the “Y Hata” Building in Wailuku.

Lt. John Jakubczak with the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division said the remains were not totally covered by dirt or surrounding vegetation, although the recent inclement weather could have unearthed the remains.

An initial forensic scene investigation indicates that the unidentified skeletal remains were at least five years old.  Clothing and personal effects were also located near the remains.  The remains were recovered and transported to the Maui County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.

An investigation into the discovery of the human skeletal remains has been initiated and attempts to identify the remains will be made, to include looking into outstanding missing person reports on file.
