PEDESTRIAN IN MARCH 13 BUS ACCIDENT DIES

One of the victims involved in a crash in Kaanapali earlier this month, has since died. Authorities say 81-year-old Leo Nekus of Lahaina died at around 7:45 last night at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Necus was one of two pedestrians that were struck by a bus on March 13, 2009. Necus was transported via medivac with critical life-threatening injuries to the hospital for treatment. A 79-year-old female was also transported to the hospital and was remains in stable condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The incient was reported at 7:49 a.m. (March 13, 2009) on the Honoapiilani Highway at the intersection with Kai Ala Drive in Kaanapali.

Maui police say the bus was executing a left turn from Kai Ala Drive onto Honoapiilani Highway, headed in the Napili direction, while the pedestrians were crossing Honoapiilani Highway, from Kai Ala Drive headed in the mauka direction.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. The accident is Maui County’s 4th traffic fatality victim in 2009, compared to 5 at the same time last year.
