PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT ON NEW WAIALE WATER TREATMENT FACILITY
The public has until May 7th to submit comments on a draft environmental impact statement for a proposed water treatment facility in Wailuku.A&B Properties wants to develop the facility on land near the Maui Community Correctional Center, processing surface water from the existing Hopoi Chute.Company officials expect the facility to provide an additional water source for the Central Maui system by producing 9 million gallons of water a day.

PROPOSED WATER FACILITY WOULD ADD 9 MGD TO CENTRAL MAUI
A&B Properties is proposing the development of a new water treatment facility on lands adjacent to the Waiale Reservoir near the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku.The new facility would process surface water from the Hopoi Chute and is expected to produce 9 million gallons of water per day.
The new facility is proposed for location near the northern property boundary of the reservoir site, on property owned by A&B.
The company views the project as an integrated approach to providing a new source of water for both the short and long term.According to the Draft EIS prepared for the company, the new Wai’ale site was selected as one of the final candidate strategies in the county’s Water Use and Development Plan formulation process to provide new water source for the Central Maui system.
The county’s recently adopted Ordinance No. 3502, relating to water availability, specifically requires verification of a long-term, reliable supply of water before subdivisions can be approved.

Facility components will include a metal control building, sludge lagoons, chlorine storage building, and related treatment works and utilities improvements. Treated water would be conveyed to the nearby Waiale Storage Tank, owned by the County of Maui. The project would also include the construction of a new access driveway to connect to the Kuikahi Drive extension. Additionally, an emergency access is proposed to connect to Waiinu Road, near its intersection with Waiale Road.
The proposed action involves infrastructure connections to the County’s Waiale Water Tank, as well as utility connections to County utility systems.
The applicant is preparing an environmental impact statement in cooperation with Chapter 343, HRS.
