The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the boundary gate of the Makawao Forest Reserve on Wednesday as crews begin maintenance work at the site.  The gate, located on Kahakapao Road was closed as of April 1, 2009.

DLNR is working to construct drainage improvements to the roadway, with completion expected in July 2009.  This work was initially scheduled to begin on February 2, 2009, but was delayed due to weather conditions.

“The area receives large amounts of rain annually which creates a drainage problem for the heavily used road.  The construction of the drainage swales will allow for better water management and help to sustain the road and drainage ditches for the future,” said John Cumming, Division of Forestry and Wildlife Maui district manager.

During the time of the forest reserve boundary gate closure, emergency response vehicles and County of Maui Department of Water Supply vehicles will be allowed access, but all others are asked to park below the gate and walk in.

“The Makawao Forest Reserve is enjoyed by hunters, hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and outdoors enthusiasts,” said Cumming. “During this closure, DLNR will be establishing a volunteer group focused on developing protocol relating to access to the Forest Reserve,” Cumming added.

Persons interested in participating in this effort may contact Torrie Nohara at (808) 873-3508.
