Series Of Swells Expected In Hawaiian Islands

A series of west northwest swells are expected in the islands this week.  The swells were generated by a series of strong storms and will affect the north and west facing shores through most of this week.

The first swell arrived overnight and will linger through the day with advisory level surf expected.  A second, and much larger swell, is expected to bring warning level surf Tuesday through Thursday this week.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.  Rising surf of 12 to 16 feet is expected on the north facing shores of Maui, Molokai and Oahu, and the north and west facing shores of Kauai.  Surf along the west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai will rise to 8 to 12 feet today.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion.
