UPW announces endorsement of Tavares

The 13,000 member United Public Workers Union announced the endorsement of Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares on Tuesday in her bid for re-election. The endorsement is the second from a union after the mayor secured support from the ILWU on March 3, 2010. UPW State Director Dayton Nakanelua called Tavares’ leadership “smart and effective.”

The UPW cited Tavares’ commitment to public service, leadership, and her ability to collaborate as key reasons for the endorsement.

“Mayor Tavares been able to successfully navigate Maui County through these uncertain economic times,” said UPW State Director Dayton Nakanelua. “Her ability to look out for our working families and form meaningful partnerships is exactly what’s needed. We believe that Mayor Tavares has demonstrated smart, effective leadership and she has risen up to the many challenges time and time again throughout her first term. UPW is proud to endorse her for re-election so that she can continue to help keep Maui County moving forward.”

“The fact that the vote was unanimous shows that we’re confident that Mayor Tavares understands the challenges our membership and their families face,” said Jasmine Apa, PAC Chairperson.

“It’s an honor to receive UPW’s endorsement,” said Tavares in response to the endorsement announcement. “Their members work hard to make our state the great place it is. The working families of Maui County are an essential part of our community and I’m grateful for their trust and for this important endorsement and vote of confidence,” she said.

Tavares is seeking her second term as mayor of Maui. She won the 2006 mayoral election after serving as a member of the County Council for 5 consecutive terms.
