The Department of Education is alerting residents of a scam in which false solicitations are being made for monetary donations to assist with the recent fire at Kahului School.

An early morning fire on Sunday April 18, 2010 at Kahului School destroyed three classrooms, causing an estimated $500,000 damage. Photo by Wendy Osher.

Reports have been made by residents in the Kihei area who claim a male and female couple in their 30’s, along with a child, have been going door to door asking for the donations.

Officials say the Department of Education is not soliciting cash donations, and the public should not contribute to such requests.  Anyone with information should call Maui Police.

The fire at Kahului School caused an estimated $500,000 in damage and destroyed three classrooms.  It was reported in the early morning hours on Sunday April 18, 2010.
