High winds forced the closure of the uppermost section of Haleakala National Park today (Thursday, May 20, 1010).  Park officials closed the area between the upper visitor (Haleakala Visitor Center) center and Red Hill (the very top) as a precautionary measure.  All park visitor centers remained open.

Park visitors are reminded to drive carefully and when parking, park into the wind so car to prevent damage to car doors.

The National Weather Service extended the wind advisory for the Summit of Haleakala until 6 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010.  The agency is forecasting winds of 25 to 40 mph with higher gusts through Friday afternoon.
