New Explosive Detection System unveiled at Kahului Airport

The State Department of Transportation dedicated a new, state of the art Explosive Detection System today at Kahului Airport.

A new multi-million dollar Explosive Detection System was unveiled today at Kahului Airport. The project was made possible through federal stimulus funds and is part of the latest security upgrades implemented at Hawaii Airports. Photo by Wendy Osher (June 2010).

The new system is expected to provide a simplified flight check-in process for air travelers, open up more lobby space, and provide air travel security.  The system features screening equipment installed behind the ticketing and check-in terminal area.

The project was funded by federal stimulus dollars through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The EDS provides a fully-integrated, enhanced baggage security screening system capable of detecting explosives, weapons and other contraband materials for the protection of air travelers.

The new system is designed to have sufficient capacity to handle growth for the next 20 years.

Three years ago, permits were approved for the $18.5 million project.
