Transport of Kahuku Wind turbine components starts today August 2

Trucks begin the transport of turbine blades today to the new wind project site in Kahuku.  The deliveries from Kalaeloa Barbers Point to First Wind’s project site will continue through August and includes oversized trailers accompanied by a police escort. 

First Wind broke ground on the wind project on July 13. When complete, the 30 MW facility will have the capacity to power about 7,700 Oahu homes.  The company currently operates Hawaii’s largest wind facility on the island of Maui at Kaheawa above Maalaea.  The Maui project currently serves 9 percent of Maui’s annual electricity needs, enough to supply nearly 11,000 households per year. 

“We will make every effort to see that the transportation process goes smoothly without significant traffic disruptions,” said Kekoa Kaluhiwa, First Wind director for external affairs.  “We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience.”

Traffic will be stopped as the trucks navigate the intersection of the H-2 Freeway and Ka Uka Boulevard and along Kamehameha Highway as the trucks pass Waimea Bay.  Otherwise, no lane closures or adjustments to normal traffic operations are expected.  First Wind is coordinating the transport operation with the State Department of Transportation, the Honolulu Police Department and other organizations along the delivery route. Deliveries will be made on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
