Maui Island Plan poised for approval in 2011-2013 by incoming council

Maui County Councilmember Sol Kahoohalahala says the inaugural Maui Island Plan is well positioned to be enacted by the 2011-2013 council.

The Planning committee already held 25 meetings on the document, completing initial revisions on 7 of the 10 chapters.  Kahoohalahala, who served at the chair of the council’s Planning Committee for the past two years, said the work lays the foundation for the next council to finish the Maui Island Plan and begin work on the Lanai and Molokai documents.

The council’s self-imposed deadline to adopt the Maui Island Plan expired last month, and the new council will be tasked with setting a new time limit.  The Maui Island Plan is intended to establish Maui’s first growth boundaries and establish policies and values to guide the county in its decision making for the next two decades.

The broader, Countywide Policy Plan was adopted in March, replacing the Maui County General Plan, approved 20 years ago.
