What a Shift!
by Maesyn
This past Sunday night, a swarm of tanned, elegantly dressed Mauians descended upon a private dwelling at the very tip of Makena, the Sugarman Estate.
The event was a movie screening and lecture by world famous “change your thoughts, change your life” writer, Wayne Dyer.
Dyer is traveling around the world right now, exposing the masses to his fantastically inspiring movie, “The Shift.” Starring Portia De Rossi, as well as Dyer himself, the film cleverly weaves together Dyer’s inspiring, insightful narrative with metaphorically scripted personal dramas of characters in the midst of massive internal transition.
The precursory buzz on the island had been going strong for weeks. Everyone was thrilled to attend the $60 a head, 10 course catered event at the legendary Sugarman Estate. The four acre waterfront property is owned by Joe Sugarman, the former owner of the Maui News.
With sprawling green lawns, dozens of papaya and coconut trees, and a magnificent 5 bedroom house, the land overlooks a private cove and the open sea.
Special top secret guests like Ram Das and Bonnie Raitt mixed anonymously into the throng.

As attendees arrived throughout the afternoon, a traditional Hawaiian hula band sang sweet harmonies and danced. Then Dreamingbear took the stage for some ecstatic poetry.
This was followed by a performance by a clan of locally based musicians (Maesyn, Shambhu, Kit Thomas & Carlos Garcia) who improvised a set of funky ambient music while the guests mingled and ate dinner on the lawn.
Katira and Raphael then held ceremony with sacred Hawaiian chants as darkness fell, and the crowd settled in for Dr. Dyer’s presentation.
When the legendary Dr. Dyer took the stage it was as if everyone present just dropped their sense of Self and fell into a space of vulnerability. Everyone was there for the same reason: to learn, grow, and expand their consciousness.
From his very first words, Dyer cut right to heart of the human condition that plagues us all, our attachment to accomplishments and material things.
He previewed the concepts in his movie, explained the process and backstory behind the project, and then turned the stage over to the film.
It was a funny, heart touching, well written story of the personal dramas of several characters, and how they shift from lives that were based on conditioned value systems of achievement into choices based on serving and contributing to others.
Interwoven throughout was Wayne Dyer’s narrative, eloquently encapsulating the parables’ lessons in easily digestible nuggets.
Everyone left the event giddy with the enthusiasm of having experienced a piece of genius art. The buzz in the air clearly said that this is a film that is going to reach and change the world.
You can order the film on Amazon, or you can download it at Wayne’s website. The preview is on Youtube.
May we all find the meaning of life as it applies to us.
Aloha!
