Maui under Flash Flood Warning until 7 a.m. 12/10/10

Maui is currently under a Flash Flood WARNING until 7 a.m.  Radar at 4 a.m. showed a line of heavy showers and thunderstorms moving southeast over the island of Maui.  The heaviest rain will initially affect West Maui, then spread eastward to the remainder of the Valley Isle.  Torrential rain with rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour is expected.

Locations in the warning include, but are not limited to: Waiehu, Pauwela and Honokowai.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in vehicles or on foot.  The National Weather Service says “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Runoff from this storm may also cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain.  The warning may need to be extended beyond 7 a.m. if flash flooding persists.
