Hawaii Population Grows 12.3%
According to early Census 2010 data released yesterday, Hawaii’s population has reached 1,360,301 on April 1, 2010; representing 12.3% increase between 2000 and 2010.
- Hawaii’s population ranking moved up 2 places in 2010 to the 40th place in the nation from 42nd in 2000; between Idaho and Maine.
- In terms of population density, Hawaii’s 211.8 people per square mile in 2010 is 2.42 times of the U.S. population density; and ranked 14th in the nation between Illinois and Virginia.
- In terms of average annual growth, Hawaii’s growth rate is higher than 9.3% growth rate experienced between 1990 and 2000.

The Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) said that the faster growth of Hawaii’s population in the most recent decade than the previous one may due to the economic growth at the beginning of the decade. Hawaii’s economy grew at an annual rate of 4.1% between 2001 and 2006. Including the economic recession of 2008 and 2009, the economic growth rate in Hawaii between 2000 and 2009 was 2.3% per year.
Maui County population characteristics will be released by the U.S. Census Bureau early 2011.
