Kahului Bank Robbery Update: Suspect flees without cash

An ongoing investigation is being conducted into an attempted bank robbery in Kahului this morning. The incident was reported at around 11:30 a.m., at the Kahului branch of First Hawaiian Bank, located at 20 Kaahumanu Avenue.

Maui Police described the suspect as a male, approximately six-feet tall, with a slim build, and wearing a camouflage jacket and camouflage pants. According to police reports, the man entered the bank, approached the teller and handed the teller a note demanding that money be placed into a bag.

Police say the suspect fled the bank, leaving a suspicious device on the counter. He did not escape with any money. The bank was closed into the afternoon.

Authorities with the FBI and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting Maui Police with the ongoing investigation.
