MIL Soccer: Bears, Sabers play to scoreless tie
By Fred Guzman
It’s been 15 long years since Maui High last won an MIL title, and nearly that long since the Sabers have fielded a consistently competitive team.
But that’s all changed this season under first-year head coach Angelo Ladera, a former all-MIL player at King Kekaulike who subsequently played at the junior college, small college and semi-pro levels before returning to the Valley Isle.
Last night, Maui High maintained its one-point lead in the Division-I standings by playing to a scoreless deadlock against defending champion and arch-rival Baldwin at War Memorial Stadium. The Sabers are 3-0-2. The Bears are 3-1-1.
Earlier, the Baldwin girls improved to 6-0 with a 3-0 win over Maui High.
In an Upcountry double-header, the Kamehameha girls improved to 6-0 with a 5-0 romp past King Kekaulike. In an exciting boy’s match, Kekaulike outlasted the Warriors 4-3, winning the game in the final minute on a goal by Michael Teves.
