Hirono Celebrates Start of 112th Congress with Saimin Reception
By Wendy Osher
Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) celebrated the swearing in of the 112th Congress today with a saimin reception in Washington D.C. The “Saimin with Mazie” event featured hot saimin—a noodle dish unique to the islands, similar to Japanese ramen—and other treats from Hawaii.
Dozens of people, including fellow Congressional Delegates stopped by to warm-up and gear-up for the 2011 legislative session which began today. Among those in the freshman class is fellow U.S. Representative, Colleen Hanabusa who represents the 1st Congressional District that encompasses urban Honolulu.
Hirono, Hawaii’s Senior U.S. Rep., is now in her third term representing Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District that includes Maui, the other neighbor islands and rural Honolulu. She was first elected to the post in 2006 and serves on both the Committee on Education and Labor, and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
