Maui Hosting Two State Prep Tournaments

You would think that the powers that be would space out the various state tournaments so each of the sports could maximize their brief time in the spotlight.

Instead, state high school championship events in seven sports on three islands – including two events here on Maui — are crammed into this week’s sporting calendar.

The girls’ golf championship tees off Tuesday at Waikoloa Village on the Big Island.

Softball begins Tuesday and baseball on Wednesday, with finals set for Rainbow Wahine and Les Murakami stadiums on the UH campus.

MIL softball champ Lahainaluna and Baldwin compete in Division-I.

The Bears open against Mililani at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The fourth-seeded Lunas face the winner of Punahou versus Castle at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

In D-II, Molokai challenges Kalaheo and Hana meets Waialua in Tuesday’s first-round.

Water polo begins on Wednesday on the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus. Lahainaluna and Baldwin qualified.

The Valley Isle will play host a pair of events.

The boys and girls tennis tournaments will be held at the Royal Lahaina and Lahaina Civic Center courts starting Thursday.

The state track meet will be held Friday and Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.

Judo takes place at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday.
