Rock and Roll Meets Yoga at New Wailuku Studio
By Katie McMillan
If you’ve been interested in experiencing the health benefits of yoga but you’re not a fan of the standard new age environment that is heavily cultivated at most yoga studios, Body Alive Yoga and Movement Studio in Wailuku has just the class for you. Broga, which stands for Body Rock Yoga, infuses the edge of rock and roll with the strengthening and toning benefits of yoga to create a high-energy experience that is both fun and healthy.
According to a recent article in Bloomberg Business News, Massachusetts-based personal trainer, Robert Sidoti, created Broga after he discovered how much practicing yoga improved his golf swing. New age music or mood lighting never inspired him and he wanted to create a practice that was more dude-friendly. Body Alive is the first Maui studio to offer this new style of yoga.
“Broga activates the inner dude in you. The class incorporate asanas (postures) from an ashtanga based practice using a moving Kundalini breath. We incorporate Pilates influenced moves to build warmth while moving through the postures to a mixture of slow metal and rock music. This class is a solid hour of a fun challenge and release to the life’s obstacles suitable for all levels to grow and learn,” states Body Alive Founder Rachel Gonzalez.
Body Alive Yoga and Movement Studio is celebrating its grand opening this Friday night from 5-9pm. Come and meet the staff, learn about class offerings, and check out the new space located at 1995 Main St on the 2nd Floor in Wailuku.
The celebration will feature live music by Joey the Wrench, an art show with pieces by owner Rachel Gonzalez, Cudra Clover, Max Vega, and Johnny Perez, a body painted yoga performance directed by Rachel Deboer with Fabulous Faces, and healthy food samples with Andrea from Down to Earth. In addition, get a sneak preview of merchandise from their “Secret Room” featuring yummy treats by Arbonne essentials, clothes and jewelry and more by various local artists such as Scarllati.
