Kamehameha-Maui Loses Opener in State Baseball

All things considered, Cody Pundyke had a strong outing on the mound for Kamehameha-Maui. The senior right-hander allowed six hits, walked none and gave up only one earned run.

But the Warriors managed just four hits of their own and suffered a 3-1 loss to Pearl City in Wednesday’s opening round of the state Division-I baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The loss relegated Kamehameha-Maui to a 9 a.m. consolation bracket game against Roosevelt, which suffered an 11-1 spanking at the hands of Kailua.

The MIL’s two other qualifiers are in action today.

Third-seeded Baldwin opens its bid in D-I with a 4:30 showdown against Mid-Pacific. The Owls opened with a 7-1 win over Mililani.

In D-II action at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu, Molokai meets fourth-seeded Radford at 1:30 p.m.

GOLF: Baldwin’s Cassy Isagawa fell just one stroke shy of defending her state girls’ championship at Waikaloa. The University of Oregon-bound senior shot a 4-over par 76 in Wednesday’s final round for an overall score of 148 to finish in a tie for second place – one stroke behind individual champion Eimi Koga of Moanalua. Baldwin finished third in the team standings, 10 strokes behind first-place Punahou and one shot behind runner-up Waiakea.

WATER POLO: Baldwin suffered a 19-5 loss to Roosevelt in an opening-round match in the state water polo championships being held on the Big Island campus of Kamehameha. Rachel Kamai scored an amazing 11 goals for Roosevelt. Fourth-seeded Lahainaluna opens its bid today with a 3:30 quarterfinal match against Mililani, which advanced by defeating Kapolei 7-3.

TENNIS: The boys and girls events begin today at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch and the Lahaina Civic Center.
