Pedestrian Dies Following May 7 Hana Hwy Crash

A man who was struck by a vehicle while walking on the Hana Highway on May 7, 2011, died one week later of injuries suffered in the crash.

Authorities have since identified the male pedestrian as Stephen Frey, 27, of Wailuku.  He died on Saturday, May 14, at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

According to police reports, Frey was walking in the north-bound lane of the Highway when he was struck by a 1999 Honda Accord, also traveling in the same direction.  The accident was reported at 12:49 a.m., less than 500 feet north of the Hansen Road intersection in Kahului.

The operator of the vehicle, a 32-year-old Pukalani man, was not injured.

The accident was the 5th traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year, compared to seven at the same time last year.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.
