8-Year Old Maui Girl Killed in Oheo Rockslide

An 8-year-old Maui girl suffered fatal injuries in a rockslide at Oheo Gulch in East Maui this afternoon. Officials with the County of Maui confirmed the death, saying the incident occurred at around 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

Maui Police described the victim as a local girl from Lahaina.  It was unclear if anyone else besides the victim was injured during the event.  No other information was available at the time of this report.

The Oheo Gulch is a popular area known by some as the Seven Sacred Pools.

Crews remained on scene at 4 o’clock this afternoon, as emergency responders and authorities continued to assess the situation.
