Hana Airport on Maui and Kalaupapa Airport on Moloka’i will receive $150,000 each in federal funds for terminal building improvements.

The funds are part of a larger $2.9 million appropriation awarded for airports on Maui, Moloka’i and the Big Island.

The remaining funds totaling $2.59 million have been awarded to Hilo International for rehabilitation of the facility’s apron and taxiway. The project will help to address the structural integrity of the taxiway and correct severe ponding on taxiways where drainage is currently insufficient.

“Hawaii’s airports provide residents access to friends and family, doctors and patients, and customers and business partners,” said U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, who joined his colleague  U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye in announcing the funding today.  “Air travel is critical in our island state, and regular improvements are essential,” he said.

“I am very pleased that the U.S. Department of Transportation recognizes the need to maintain our air travel infrastructure to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. These funds will help ensure that those traveling to and from Hilo, Hana, and Kalaupapa enjoy safe and timely air travel,” said Sen. Inouye.
