Flags will be lowered across the state on Monday, August 15, 2011 in honor of former Hawai’i County Mayor Herbert Matayoshi, who passed away earlier this month.

Governor Neil Abercrombie issued the order today saying, “Herb Matayoshi was a politician of the old school – thoughtful, supportive, encouraging, and selfless – it was never about him.”

“No matter what the issue, no matter what the circumstance, he always put Hawai’i first. He had a calm consideration not just for the facts but for what they meant for Hawai’i,” said Gov. Abercrombie.

Matayoshi was Hawai’i County’s second elected mayor in 1974 and served until 1984.  A celebration of life service will be held in Honolulu tomorrow night, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, with another service planned in Hilo on August 15.
