One woman was injured as a truck crashed through the storefronts of the Moana Bakery and Cafe and Wings Hawaii on Baldwin Ave. in Paia.
At around 1:25 p.m., the male driver of a black pickup truck says he lost control of the vehicle when he swerved to avoid another vehicle exiting a parking lot.
A woman who was on the sidewalk nearby was injured by shattered glass and was reported to be in shock. The driver appeared unharmed. There are no other known injuries at this time.
Moana Bakery and Cafe owner Don Ritchey said, “Everything is going to be all right. We’re glad no one got too severely injured. This should be an example of what happens when people come speeding down Baldwin at 80 miles per hour all day.”
Most of the damage to the property occurred on the Wings Hawaii side of the storefronts (Paia Plaza).
“I cannot even talk about this,” said Wings Hawaii co-owner Samantha Howard. “I’m in shock.”
Police and firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Police have yet to release an official statement about the accident. However, police spokesman Lt. Wayne Ibarra confirmed that the woman’s injuries were non-life threatening.
