Bicyclist Dies in Makawao Collision

A bicyclist from British Columbia suffered fatal injuries after colliding with a multipurpose vehicle in Makawao on Sunday.

The accident was reported at 9:24 a.m. (Sunday, December 4, 2011) on Makawao Avenue just north of Kee Road.

Authorities have since identified the man as Allyn Robert Parker, 65.  Police say he was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash, but succumbed to injures after being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Authorities say Parker was unable to negotiate a curve in the roadway and collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

The Maui man driving the  2004 Honda Element multipurpose vehicle involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, and was uninjured.

The accident was the 19th traffic fatality on Maui County roads compared to 11 at the same time last year.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
