Maui police have identified the male pedestrian killed in an afternoon traffic accident on the Mokulele Highway on Christmas Eve as 17-year-old Zachariah Aubut.  The full UPDATE is available at the following LINK.

As of 4:23 p.m., the Mokulele Highway was completely open in both directions.

Maui police had closed the Kahului-bound lanes for about three-and-a-half hours while they conducted an investigation into a fatal traffic accident near the Maui Raceway Park on the Mokulele Highway.

We will provide details once they become available.

Motorists traveling to or from South Maui at this hour are advised of a fatal traffic accident on the Mokulele Highway.

Maui police closed the Kahului bound lane of the highway between Mehameha and the Piilani Highway at around 1 p.m.  The area of the road closure is between mile marker 5 and 6 near the Maui Raceway Park.

Kahului-bound traffic was being diverted onto North Kihei Road at last report.  Motorists are advised to expect delays and plan accordingly.

Traffic in the Kihei bound direction is open.
