WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY TOWN PARTY Friday, January 6 from 6 – 10 p.m. in several locations on and around Market Street in Wailuku.

January’s First Friday Town Party in Wailuku will embrace the new year with an evening celebration of town project unveiling, music, food and dance.

At 6 p.m. on the Maui Thing stage, Sig Zane of Sig Zane Design will present the unveiling of the Market Street beautification project, “Kaulana Na Pua,” which is also the title of a historic Hawaiian song written in 1893 to protest Queen Lili’uokalani’s overthrow. In English, the title means, “Famous Are The Flowers.”

A multi-cultural blessing will be given by the Wailuku Community Association around 6:20 p.m.

This month’s First Friday will also celebrate the soon-beginning Year of the Dragon with a performance by Ben Seng Au Maui Lion Dancers at If The Shoe Fits at 7 p.m.

Musical entertainment for the evening is listed as follows and starts around 6:30 p.m.:

  •  Maui Taiko drums and then The Eazy on the Maui Thing Stage
  •  Maui Rumba at Banyan Tree Park
  • Gene Argel & Ohana at Cafe O Lei
  • Joel Katz at 33 N. Market St.
  • Visibly Shaken 6:30 p.m. at Gianotto’s Pizzeria

Food and drink for the evening will include a beer garden benefiting Kula Kaiapuni Hawaiian Immersion Program and several vendors filling Market Street.

Free Hawaiian Moon Calendars will be given out to early birds at Native Intelligence.

THE KRYPTONES WITH DANI GIRL CONCERT Friday, January 6 at 10 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Maui-based band The Kryptones are pairing with songstress Dani Girl to bring Charley’s into a night of  jazz, funk, and reggae.

The Kryptones have been playing on Maui for over ten years, emerging now and then for concerts with other local artists such as Marty Dread, Humble Soul, Ocean and Camille Velasco.

The band has also contributed to the sounds of Reggae legends Ziggy Marley, Steel Pulse, and Third World.

Dani Girl, also a local musician, has been singing her sweet and strong island melodies with several groups on Maui as well as solo on her album, “It’s About Time.”

UPCOUNTRY SUNDAYS ACOUSTIC STYLE  Sunday, January 8 from 2-5 p.m at Casanova in Makawao. There will be a $7 donation at the door.

A hidden treasure – on the first Sunday of every month, Mana’0 Radio hosts an acoustic showcase featuring talented local and visiting musicians.

This Sunday Ono and Steve Grimes, songwriter Steve Sargenti, and young singer Sebrina Barron will start up 2012 Upcountry Sundays Acoustic Style to benefit one of Maui’s most familiar stations.

All ages are invited to enjoy a mellow lunch, drink, or early dinner while hearing some of Maui’s musicians make the island’s music industry look really good.
