By Wendy Osher
Firefighters had to extricate a woman from a vehicle after the car she was driving became impaled by a guardrail in Wailuku late Friday night.
The accident was reported at 11:53 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2012, on Waiale Road, just south of the Kauikahi Street intersection.
According to Maui police, the vehicle struck the guardrail; and then became impaled by the guardrail–which went through the front windshield and exited through the back windshield.
The 22-year-old woman driving the car was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with non-life-threatening head injuries, according to Maui Police Officer III, Dennis Clifton, with the department’s Community Relations Section.
The woman was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Maui police closed the southbound lane of Wailale Road, near the Kuikahi intersection for about an hour following the accident.
