Haleakala Summer Internship for High School Students

Applications are now being accepted for high school internships at Haleakala National Park.

The deadline to apply for the Pohai Malie Internship Program is Friday, March 30, 2012.

The three-week internship runs from June 11-29, 2012, and is designed for students currently enrolled in grades 9-12.

Interns will be introduced to park programs and get a glimpse into careers related to natural resources management, interpretation, and facilities management.

“These programs are amongst our park’s highest priorities and one of the most important things we can do to help perpetuate Hawaii’s unique culture and life-sustaining resources for future generations,” said Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum, who inspired the establishment of youth internship programs last year at Haleakala.

Neighbor island interns must provide their own housing on Maui in proximity to the Park or a designated pick-up site. There is no fee to participate in the program.

Program hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free transportation provided from designated sites in Central Maui and Upcountry. Interns are eligible to receive a Living Allowance of $25 per day to help offset the cost of supplies they will need for the program.

A total of 12 students will be selected for the internship through a competitive process that includes a formal application and interview.
